Researchers have been able to reverse engineer the way Siri works. This enables them to intercept the replies Siri sends back and execute a range of tasks.

AI-driven smart assistants can jeopardize users’ privacy

A wide range of devices have been made smart over the last decade, including home appliances and security systems. This has brought with it a number of advantages, including improved convenience, but also raised concerns about security risks. The most obvious risk is the potential for malicious actors to gain access to user’s private information or even peer into their homes. This can happen if the device has built-in microphones, but this is not the only way that an AI-driven device could be compromised.

Voice-controlled AI assistants, or VAs, can be used to perform both virtual actions such as diary management and cyber-physical actions, such as controlling the lighting and sound system in a home. This has prompted privacy concerns, as attackers can use the voice interface to carry out nefarious actions that are imperceptible to users. Various defence measures have been proposed, and some of these involve hardware changes to the microphone technology, such as directional microphones. Others have been developed using software, and aim to reduce the attack surface by eliminating the ability of attackers to hear commands being uttered by the device.

Despite the risks associated with these devices, many people continue to use them. However, some individuals are more concerned than others about the privacy risks posed by these technologies. These individuals may choose to turn off the device’s microphones or limit the use of the device to a specific location in their home. In addition, they may be willing to pay a premium for a more secure device.

However, these preventive measures only offer limited protection. Attacks on VAs can occur both in space and time, and are able to spread between devices by hijacking the speech synthesis functionality. An example of this is seen in the instance mentioned earlier in which a Google Home device was prompted to provide data that was perceived by an Amazon Echo device as a command.

A more effective defence against these attacks is to encrypt one’s data. This can be done by switching to a service that uses encryption, such as WhatsApp or Signal. Alternatively, it can be done by turning off a device’s microphone, or by using the built-in mute button. In addition, users should not place a voice-controlled device near doors or windows to prevent it from being activated by external speakers.

AI-driven smart assistants can misuse users’ data

Many people are worried that their AI-driven smart assistants, like Amazon Alexa and Microsoft Cortana, are listening to them without their consent. They fear that the devices are recording conversations in their homes, transmitting information to a server, and sharing this data with other users. This article presents a review of peer-reviewed literature that addresses these concerns and explores potential solutions.

A VA is a software application that interprets human speech as a query or instruction and responds using synthesized voice. These applications can be run on personal computers, mobile phones, and dedicated hardware such as smart speakers. VAs can also be integrated into other devices, such as cars and home security systems. A VA can be activated by a user saying the wake word or phrase. Usually, the device will then keep waiting for a response until it receives a new command or is interrupted by another sound.

While there is no malware yet specifically targeted towards VAs, malicious attacks are possible, and they are on the rise. These can range from snooping to stealing private data. For example, a VA might record a conversation between a husband and wife about hardwood floors and transmit it to someone in their address book without their knowledge. Moreover, attackers can exploit third-party Alexa skills to perform complex tasks on the user’s device, such as downloading and installing apps, playing audiobooks, and sending a text message.

Some users are so worried about these privacy issues that they refuse to use a VA at all. Others rationalize their fears by thinking that they trust the VA company and that it will not spy on them. Nevertheless, a number of research studies have highlighted the fact that VAs can be misused to gather sensitive personal information.

A recent study found that hackers could access an iPhone’s private data by capturing inaudible ultrasound waves. This technique can be used to steal SMS codes, which can then be used to unlock the phone and gain access to its contents. It is important to note that turning off Siri and locking the iPhone prevents this kind of attack. However, it is not a foolproof method, as a hacker can still swipe the Control Center on an iPhone.

AI-driven smart assistants can be hacked

There is a growing concern over the privacy vulnerabilities of voice-controlled assistants. These studies focus on specific themes, such as addressing user concerns, improving the accuracy of authentication and limiting the impact of malicious attack. However, these studies often fail to take a holistic view of how these issues might interact.

Researchers have developed a number of different attack methods that can be used to exploit voice-controlled assistants. These attacks include exposing calendar information, instigating a reputational attack or triggering a cyber-physical action. In addition, there are a number of ways that these attacks can be customised to make them more effective and dangerous. For example, Bispham et al. have proposed a taxonomy for attack types that exploit the speech interface that separates these into overt attacks and covert attacks. The former aims to directly take control of a system, while the latter involves concealing malicious voice commands in some form of cover medium so that they are imperceptible to humans.

AI-driven smart assistants can be a security risk

Several studies have found that voice-controlled digital assistants (VAs) are vulnerable to attacks that exploit gaps between human and machine perceptions of speech and natural language. These attacks can lead to privacy breaches and other security risks. However, existing defence mechanisms are insufficient to protect these systems from such attacks. This paper presents a critical analysis of the effectiveness of these defences and proposes the development of new ones that address gaps in the current design of VAs.

Despite the fact that many people trust their VAs, they may not be aware of the risks of using them. For instance, an Alexa user reported that her device recorded a private conversation with her husband about hardwood floors and sent it to a contact without her knowledge. While Amazon claimed that the device only listens after the wake word, this incident reveals that VAs can inadvertently record and transmit audio data to unintended recipients.

In addition, the current generation of VAs stores information on centralized servers. This means that if someone gains access to a user’s computer, they can interrogate the VA and mine its stored information. They can also use malware to spy on the user’s home and make purchases through their credit cards. This threat is particularly dangerous because it can be accomplished with little technical expertise.

The most obvious way to protect against these risks is to enable encryption on all devices and services that use an AI assistant. But this option will take away some of the convenience that comes with these technologies. Ultimately, it’s up to users to decide whether they value their privacy or convenience more.

Another option is to forego the use of AI assistants altogether. This is a hard decision because these technologies have made many aspects of our lives easier and more convenient. Nevertheless, it’s worth considering whether the trade-off is worthwhile. In addition to this, the use of encrypted messaging apps is a good option for businesses. However, this will require organizations to provide training for employees who use these devices at work.
